Packing lists overlap a lot. Sivananda suggests comfortable clothes, sandals, toiletries, towels, a yoga mat, a meditation shawl, a water bottle and a torch. Isha adds a watch, a luggage lock, insect repellent, an umbrella and your own medication, and asks you to limit luggage to one trolley bag and one backpack. Dress modestly: Isha and Parmarth both ask for clothes that cover the shoulders and midriff, plus the knees at Isha and the calves at Parmarth. No shorts or tight clothes. Bring ID: foreigners need an original passport and visa, and Indian nationals need a photo ID. Food is vegetarian, and alcohol, smoking and drugs are banned. Expect early mornings and quiet hours, and plan to take part in the ashram's daily schedule.
