Volunteer Work in Exchange for Free Accommodation and Food in the USA: Ashrams & Retreat Centres

Work-exchange and seva programmes, conditions apply. Last checked 2026-10-23.

In short: Yes. Several US ashrams and retreat centres give volunteers free room and meals in exchange for work, usually 20–40 hours a week. For example, Shoshoni in Colorado needs three months, Ananda Ashram in New York needs one month, and Ati Ling in California needs three weeks. It isn't free travel: you work real hours, commit to a minimum stay and pay your own way there.

How volunteering for room and board works

Karma yoga, seva, work-study, work practice and residential volunteering are different names for the same deal. You do scheduled work, often in the kitchen, housekeeping or grounds, and take part in the daily practice schedule. In return the centre houses and feeds you. Every place on this page asks you to apply. Most interview you, and several start with a trial period. Many have prerequisites, such as an earlier retreat or course with them.

A West Coast route linking several centres

Going south to north, you could link: Madre Grande (a Weekender first), then Mount Madonna (three-month sessions with fixed start dates) or MA Center San Ramon (two-week trial), then Ati Ling (three weeks) or Odiyan (six months preferred), both near Cazadero, then Tassajara in summer. Each stop needs its own application and acceptance. Minimum stays and fixed start dates mean a route like this takes months, not weeks. You pay for travel between centres, and you'll need to confirm dates with each one. Inland and East Coast options: Shoshoni (Colorado), Neem Karoli Baba Ashram (New Mexico), Yogaville (Virginia), Ananda Ashram (New York), IMS (Massachusetts).

Workaway, Worldpackers and other platforms

Workaway and Worldpackers are membership platforms that list work-exchange hosts. Their fees and listings change, so check their own sites. For the programmes above, apply directly to the centre.

Is it really free? The honest costs

  • Travel to and between centres is at your own cost.
  • Personal, medical and insurance costs: Odiyan says volunteers must manage these themselves, and the Expanding Light requires medical insurance.
  • Gear: Neem Karoli Baba Ashram summer sevaks bring their own tent.
  • Time: minimum stays run from three weeks to six months.
  • Small fees: Tassajara charges a $75 application fee and IMS service retreats a $50 processing fee.

Questions people ask

Can you volunteer in exchange for free accommodation and food in the USA?

Yes. Shoshoni (Colorado), Ananda Ashram (New York), Mount Madonna (California), Yogaville (Virginia), Neem Karoli Baba Ashram (New Mexico) and others give room and meals for 20–40 hours of work a week. Most need you to stay weeks or months, and all need an application.

Can I stay in an ashram for free?

Only as a working volunteer or seva participant, and only once accepted. Guest stays are paid. Some work-study programmes, like the Expanding Light and the Himalayan Institute, still charge a reduced fee.

Can you live in ashrams in the USA?

Yes, for set periods through residential work-study or staff roles. Odiyan prefers at least six months, Shoshoni and Mount Madonna need three, and Ananda Ashram's live-in staff get room, board and a modest stipend.

How do you volunteer for free room and board?

Apply directly to the centre. Expect an application, an interview (Zoom or phone), sometimes references or a background check, and often a trial period. Several centres also want you to have done a retreat or course with them first.

How can I travel and volunteer for free?

Room and food can be free, but travel isn't. You pay to get to each centre, and minimum stays and fixed start dates make quick hops between centres unrealistic.

What is a karma yoga volunteer programme?

Karma yoga, or seva, means selfless service. In these programmes you work set hours and join the centre's meditation and yoga schedule in exchange for room and meals, or a reduced rate.

What is a work exchange at a retreat center?

Set hours of work for room and board. Madre Grande Monastery asks for at least 20 hours a week and Ati Ling up to 25.

Is Workaway free?

No. Workaway is a paid-membership platform. Check its site for current fees.

Do ashram volunteers get paid?

Usually not. Exceptions: Odiyan pays a $200 monthly stipend, Ananda Ashram's live-in staff get a modest stipend, Tassajara apprentices get a $25 monthly credit, and Esalen's Work Scholars earn $16.90 an hour.
