Ashrams in India where you can stay for free or by donation (ranked, 2026)
11 places in India where the room is free, by donation or in exchange for seva, ranked by cost, access for foreigners and commitment. Every policy is from the official site.
Updated 2026-10-23
In short: Yes, you can stay at some Indian ashrams for free. Sri Ramanasramam (Tiruvannamalai), the Divine Life Society (Rishikesh) and Shantikunj (Haridwar) all say on their own sites that rooms are free, and two of them say meals are free too. The catch is the rules: you apply in advance or turn up on the day, stays last days rather than months, and some places accept only devotees. If you want months, the free option is full-time seva, at Isha, Sivananda or Art of Living.
Every policy below comes from the ashram's official website, checked on 2026-10-23. Nothing here is from a booking site or a blog.
How we ranked them
Each place gets three plain scores, which we add up. When totals tie, the place with fewer steps to get a bed ranks higher.
- How free it is (0–3): 3 = free room and food with no work required. 2 = free room and food in exchange for seva. 1 = a donation with a requested or minimum amount.
- Access for foreigners (0–2): 2 = the official page says foreign visitors can stay, with no special status. 1 = allowed with conditions, or the page doesn't say. 0 = Indian residents only.
- Minimum commitment (0–2): 2 = a short stay with no course needed first. 1 = a fixed course, a stay of a few days that requires an earlier course, or bookings only in set periods. 0 = months of commitment or a required program before you can apply.
We left out any ashram whose official site doesn't publish its stay terms. They're listed near the end, with the reason.

By city
- Rishikesh: Divine Life Society, free with written permission (#2). We couldn't confirm free-stay terms for Parmarth Niketan or Gita Bhawan.
- Haridwar: Shantikunj, free for up to 2 days (#4), and Sri Ram Ashram, by requested donation (#9).
- Tiruvannamalai: Sri Ramanasramam, free for devotees who apply online (#3). There's more in ashrams in Tiruvannamalai to stay.
- Varanasi and Vrindavan: We found no official page that offers free or donation stays. See ashrams in Varanasi to stay and our ashram stay cost guide.
Left out, and why
- Amritapuri (Mata Amritanandamayi Math): Its FAQ says everyone is welcome and meals come with the room, but it doesn't publish the cost, so we can't call the stay free or donation-based.
- Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry: Its guest houses are "not for the casual tourist looking for inexpensive accommodation". No free, donation or seva terms are published.
- Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh: There's an online volunteer application, but no published cost or stay terms.
- Auroville: Its FAQ says free housing isn't provided as a general rule. Long-term volunteers registered with ATR pay a monthly contribution, and foreigners can only commit for 6–12 months.
- Anandashram, Kanhangad: The official site has no information on stays.
- Gita Bhawan, Rishikesh: The official site returned a server error when we checked, and we didn't use unofficial copies.
- Brahma Kumaris, YSS Ranchi: No public stay or seva terms were published.
How to apply safely
- Apply only through the official site or email address in each source link above.
- Don't travel until you have a confirmation in writing, wherever the ashram requires one (Sri Ramanasramam, the Divine Life Society, Dhamma Giri, Radha Soami Satsang Beas).
- "Free" means hospitality, not a hostel. Follow the schedule, and give a donation if you can. See ashram etiquette and what to pack.

Questions people ask
Can I stay in an ashram in India for free?
Yes, at a few. Sri Ramanasramam, the Divine Life Society in Rishikesh and Shantikunj in Haridwar publish free accommodation, and Vipassana centres like Dhamma Giri charge nothing for 10-day courses. Each has its own rules: an application, a short maximum stay, or joining the daily schedule.
Can foreigners stay for free?
Some ashrams accept foreigners. Sri Ramanasramam allows them up to 14 days, and the Divine Life Society takes foreign nationals who show their passport and visa. Art of Living's free seva housing is for Indian residents only. Radha Soami Satsang Beas hosts only non-Indians who are initiated.
Can I stay at Isha Yoga Center for free?
Yes, as a volunteer. Isha gives free dormitory beds and two meals a day to volunteers aged 18 and over who've completed Inner Engineering with Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya. Stays run 5 to 180 days, and you apply with the Volunteering Interest Form.
Is there a free ashram stay in Rishikesh or Haridwar?
In Rishikesh, the Divine Life Society offers free room and food with written permission, requested at least 15 days ahead. In Haridwar, Shantikunj gives up to 2 days free with no booking, if beds are available, and you join all the daily activities.
How long can I stay for free?
Usually days, not months. Shantikunj allows 2 days, Sri Ramanasramam allows 5 days for Indians and 14 for foreigners, and the Golden Temple's free sarai generally allows 3. Longer free stays mean full-time seva, such as Isha's 180-day limit or Sivananda's 6-month minimum.
