Living in an Ashram Permanently or Long-Term in India: What's Really Allowed (Checked 2026-10-23)
Can you live in an ashram long-term? Official seva and residential terms at Isha, Art of Living, Sivananda Rishikesh, Aurobindo and Ramanasramam.
Updated 2026-10-23
In short: Most Indian ashrams don't offer open-ended stays to walk-in guests. Long stays usually mean full-time volunteering or a residential program, by application. Isha allows volunteering from 5 to 180 days, Art of Living offers long-term seva for eligible Indian residents, and Sivananda Ashram Rishikesh needs written permission first.
Every policy below is from the ashram's own website, last checked 2026-10-23.
Can you stay in an ashram forever?
Not as a guest, at any ashram we could verify. Guest rooms are for short visits: Sri Ramanasramam caps stays at five days for Indians and 14 for foreigners, and Sri Aurobindo Ashram's guest houses are for visitors, "not for the casual tourist". What does exist is committed seva: you apply, meet eligibility rules, follow a full-time schedule and, at some ashrams, get free food and a dorm bed in return. The longest published route we found is Isha's Poornanga, a residential commitment of at least three years.
Taking sannyas or joining a monastic order is a separate path that each tradition handles internally; none of the official pages we checked publishes a public application for it, so we don't describe one here.

Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore: three long-stay routes
Isha publishes the clearest long-stay ladder of any ashram we checked. See our Isha Yoga Center listing.
Ashram volunteering (5 to 180 days)
Volunteering is "free-of-charge" and open all year to people who can give five days or more, up to 180 days. You must be 18 or older and have completed Inner Engineering, including initiation into Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya; eligible volunteers "stay at the dormitory accommodation free of cost". Rooms are shared dorms; men and women are housed separately, and couples' rooms are "subject to availability". Two vegetarian meals a day are served (10 am and 7 pm), and the kitchen can't cater for special diets. To stay longer, you ask at the Volunteer Reception Office. You fill in an interest form, get a call within 3 days and a response within 7. Remote work isn't realistic given the schedule. Isha – Ashram Volunteering
Sadhanapada (7 months)
A 7-month residential program, listed for July 2027 to February 2028, "offered without a fee" and including food and accommodation. You must be at the centre continuously from Guru Purnima to Mahashivratri, follow a 5:30 am–9:30 pm schedule with full attendance, and complete Inner Engineering first. Applying involves an interest form, a video call and a health assessment. For foreigners, Isha says a tourist visa "will not be appropriate" and that the team guides confirmed participants on the right visa type. Isha – Sadhanapada
Poornanga (3 years or more)
The nearest thing to living permanently at Isha: a minimum three-year commitment, residing at the Isha Yoga Center, "offered free of charge" with food, accommodation and basic amenities. Sadhanapada completion is mandatory. Isha says it is "not designed as a relaxed or retirement-oriented experience". Isha – Poornanga
Art of Living International Center, Bengaluru: seva for Indian residents
The centre lists short-term volunteering (1, 3 or 6 months, minimum 15 days), long-term volunteering for "a longer period of time" (no length given), internships for students, and Learn While You Serve 2.0 (3 or 6 months, ages 18–35). The page notes these types are "applicable only for Indian Residents". You need to be 18+, have done the Happiness Program/YES!+, YLTP or the Online Meditation and Breath Workshop, and bring a medical certificate of physical and mental fitness; volunteers aged 60 can serve "only if our medical team approves". The process: form, virtual interview, travel, medical check-up on arrival, then seva allocation. Art of Living – Volunteering
On cost, the page says seva "does not require Donations or fee payments of any kind". Accommodation (dormitory or sharing) and three meals are free, but only for volunteers staying at least a month; shorter stays mean paid rooms or volunteering as a non-resident. Volunteering is full time, so you can't hold a job alongside it. The page doesn't describe a route for non-residents of India. See our Art of Living listing.
Sivananda Ashram (Divine Life Society), Rishikesh
The Divine Life Society says that, because of limited space, "visitors must come for shorter/longer stay only after writing and obtaining a written permission" from the General Secretary. dlshq.org No maximum stay is published. The accommodation form must be sent at least 15 days ahead, as an attached file and not a web link. It asks for the reference of a person you know living at the ashram, your spiritual background and purpose of visit. Original passport and visa/OCI (foreigners) or photo ID (Indians) are mandatory at the desk. DLS accommodation form (PDF) The ashram "does not charge anything for any Seva" and never books rooms by phone or WhatsApp. sivanandaonline.org See our Sivananda Ashram listing.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry: short guest stays
The ashram runs a few guest houses for "visitors to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and not for the casual tourist looking for inexpensive accommodation". They have no phones, TVs or Wi-Fi in rooms, most close their gates at 10:30 pm, and only Park, Cottage and New Guest House can do the FRO registration foreigners need. The stay page publishes no long-stay or volunteer route. Sri Aurobindo Ashram – Stay See our listing.
Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai: a short-stay example
Rooms and meals are free, but stays are capped at five days for Indian nationals and 14 for foreigners, are for devotees of Sri Bhagavan, and must be requested online. You need a gap of at least four months before a revisit. Sri Ramanasramam – Accommodation See our listing.
Is a long-term ashram stay free?
In some cases. Isha volunteering, Sadhanapada and Poornanga are officially free, with food and a dorm bed. Art of Living seva has no fee, with free board for stays of a month or more. The Divine Life Society says it charges nothing for seva. None of these is a free "lifetime" room: each is tied to work, a schedule and approval. For anywhere else, ask the ashram directly. More in our free ashram stays guide and what ashram stays cost.
Long stays for women
None of the ashrams above calls itself women-only. Isha houses men and women separately on its volunteering, Sadhanapada and Poornanga pages. The Divine Life Society's form states that "Women and people of advanced age are expected to visit the Ashram only with a close relative and not alone." Art of Living's page doesn't state anything specific to women.
Many searches for "ladies ashram" are really about women's shelters (mahila ashrams), which this guide doesn't cover. If you need shelter or are in danger, contact your local police or an official government women's helpline rather than an online listing.
Rishikesh, Haridwar and Vrindavan long stays
Of the places people search for, we could verify a long-stay process only at Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh (above). We found no official long-stay policy for ashrams in Haridwar or Vrindavan, so we don't list any; contact an ashram directly and ask for its terms in writing. See also ashrams in Rishikesh to stay.
How to apply and what they'll ask
- A prior program: Inner Engineering (Isha); Happiness Program, YES!+ or YLTP (Art of Living).
- Health: health assessment (Sadhanapada), medical certificate and check-up on arrival (Art of Living), disclosure of conditions (Isha).
- An interview or call: Isha and Art of Living both screen by phone or video.
- ID and references: ID or passport and visa, plus a reference at the ashram (DLS).
- Full-time commitment: no outside job during seva at Isha or Art of Living.
Before you go, read our ashram etiquette guide and packing list, or browse volunteer ashrams.
Booking safety
- Apply only through the official sites linked here. The Divine Life Society warns that a fake site, sivanandaashram.co.in, collects money for rooms and courses, and that it never books by phone or WhatsApp.
- Red flags: a "lifetime stay" for a one-time fee, a "donation" for a permanent room, agents, or payment to a personal UPI ID.
- Foreigners: check your visa type with the ashram and official Indian government sources before a long seva stay. Isha says a tourist visa is not appropriate for Sadhanapada.
- Share your plans with someone at home and use only official contact details.
Questions people ask
Can I stay in an ashram forever?
Not as a guest at any ashram we verified. Long stays work through committed seva or residential programs, by application. The longest published route is Isha's Poornanga, a minimum three-year residential commitment that requires Inner Engineering and Sadhanapada first.
Which ashram is free to stay permanently in India?
We found no official open-ended free stay. Free long-stay routes are tied to seva: Isha volunteering (5–180 days, free dorm), Sadhanapada and Poornanga, Art of Living seva (free board for a month or more) and Divine Life Society seva, which it says is free of charge.
How do I join an ashram permanently?
Apply for long-term seva on the ashram's official site. Expect eligibility rules, such as a prior program, an interview, a health check and a full-time schedule. At Isha the path runs from volunteering to Sadhanapada to Poornanga.
Can I stay at Isha (Sadhguru) ashram for free?
Yes, as a volunteer. Isha says volunteering is free of charge for 5 to 180 days, with free shared dormitory accommodation and two meals a day, if you are 18+ and have completed Inner Engineering with Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya.
Can I stay in the Art of Living ashram long-term?
If you're an Indian resident, yes, through short- or long-term seva. You need to be 18+, have done the Happiness Program, YES!+ or YLTP, clear an interview and a medical check. Food and dorm stay are free for volunteers who stay at least a month.
Can I stay in Sivananda Ashram Rishikesh long-term?
Only with written permission from the Divine Life Society's General Secretary, requested at least 15 days ahead on the official form. The society publishes no maximum stay and says it charges nothing for seva.
Can I stay in Aurobindo Ashram Pondicherry?
In its guest houses, which are meant for visitors to the ashram rather than tourists. The official stay page publishes no long-stay or volunteer route. Foreigners must use one of the three FRO-authorised guest houses.
Which ashram can ladies stay in permanently?
We found no verified women-only long-stay ashram. Isha houses men and women separately. The Divine Life Society's form says women are expected to visit with a close relative. If you need shelter rather than a spiritual stay, contact the police or an official women's helpline.
Can couples stay together during long seva?
At Isha, couples can ask during the call, and shared rooms are subject to availability; each person applies separately. Other ashrams here don't say.
Can foreigners do long-term seva in an ashram?
Art of Living's seva types are listed for Indian residents only. Isha's Sadhanapada accepts foreigners but says a tourist visa is not appropriate and guides confirmed participants on visas. Check visa rules with the ashram and official sources.
